Even though there are lots of materials available to build kayaks, wood is predominantly used in its building. Wooden kayaks are strong and light weight. Building kayak with wood is affordable to all and also wood is an easily available material.
The Traveler is a bit longer and narrower than the Blackstone offering more stowage and greater speed as well as more leg room for taller paddlers. Like the Blackstone, it is a very comfortable and stable kayak, and though it performs very well, it would still be classified as a recreational kayak because of the beam and wide open cockpit. Recreational kayaks are, for most people, better suited for things like fishing, kayak camping or just a slow comfortable day on the water.
We custom build small wooden boats including canoes, kayaks, fishing boats, and speed boats. All boats are built to U. Coast Guard safety standards.
I have always wanted to build a cedar strip kayak; from scratch, not from plans, and definitely NOT riddled with staple holes. In this book I take the reader from sketches on paper, through final drawings, lofting to find the dimensions of the kayak, building the frame, finding cedar lumber and cutting and assembling cedar strips, stripping the hull and the deck, fiber-glassing and finishing the kayak. I then add foot braces and a seat and take it for a test float.
Sometimes I like to get on the water by myself and sometimes a canoe will suit me just fine. Other times the weather is not suitable for a canoe, too windy, too wavy or I just want to cruise the waterways a little more efficiently. A kayak can handle a bit of rough water and can cruise along at speeds comparable to a tandem canoe with two paddlers.

Ever wondered what the beach and the shore looked like from the 'other side'? Did you ever wish to 'test the waters' at the hard-to-get-to fishing spot in the marshes or the estuary? How about looking out of your car's window over the water and wishing you were there with THOSE kayakers who are having so much fun out there on a glorious spring day.
Building your own fishing kayak is not only rewardingit can also allow you to customize your style, design and visual components. There are many styles to choose from, depending on your personal needs. The kayak you build should depend on where you plan to fish, how far you'll paddle, how fast you'll need to go, and how much storage space you need for equipment and fish.
