The story of Snow White—most familiar to Western readers in its Brothers Grimm literary incarnation from the nineteenth century—is often conflated with that of Sleeping Beauty, known to readers primarily through translations of its artful literary version, from the seventeenth century, by Charles Perrault. Both young girls are put into a suspended sleep, and each is awoken to find, hovering above her, a handsome prince, who takes her off to Happily Ever After. As popular as bound volumes of Grimm and Perrault once were, the vehicles that have most widely disseminated their stories are the animated, feature-length musical films produced by Disney over most of the past century.
Plenty of fairy tales have come and gone, but few have touched the imagination like Snow White. Besides that, it was also the first American movie to have a soundtrack album made and released along with it. While the project was in production, competitors referred to it as "Disney's folly.

While profit lay in feature films, Disney was unsure if audiences would be interested in a seven-reel cartoon that focused more on personality and character development than slapstick and bright colors. So perfect is the illusionso tender the romance and fantasy, so emotional are certain portions when the acting of the characters strikes a depth comparable to the sincerity of human players, that the film approaches real greatness. It is an inspired and inspiring work, the commercial success of which will be notable, particularly the heavy foreign returns because of the mechanical ease with which all languages may be synchronized to the action. In a foreword Disney pays a neat compliment to animators, designers and musical composers whose united efforts have produced a work of art. No less than 62 staff names are flashed in the credit titles as being responsible for various divisions of the job.
Ordered by the queen to kill the young princess, a sympathetic woodsman instead urges Snow White to hide in the forest; there she encounters a host of friendly animals, who lead her to a cottage inhabited by the Seven Dwarfs: Sleepy, Dopey, Doc, Sneezy, Grumpy, Bashful and Happy. Eventually, in the classic happy ending viewers would come to expect as a Disney trademark, love conquers all as the dwarfs defeat the villainous queen and Snow White finds love with a handsome prince. Snow White premiered in Hollywood on December 21,earning a standing ovation from the star-studded crowd.
